Good Health Is Wealth

The realization “Good health is wealth” , always happen when a person has achieved or in the process of achieving his/her financial success but has lost one’s physical and mental health  along the way, through sheer neglect.

The saying about the above highlights the idea that good health is more valuable than material possessions.

Here’s why:

  • Health is the foundation for everything one do: With good health, one can has the energy and stamina to pursue one’s goals, work productively, enjoy experiences, and build strong relationships. Poor health can limit one’s ability to do all of these things.

  • Health can be expensive to regain: While money can buy you many things, it can’t buy perfect health. Medical bills can be a huge financial burden, and some health problems are simply not curable. Investing in your health through preventative measures can save you money in the long run.

  • Good health allows one’s to enjoy life more: When one is healthy, one can appreciate the simple things in life more fully. One can travel, spend time with loved ones, and experience new things without feeling held back by physical limitations.

  • Health contributes to mental and emotional well-being: There’s a strong connection between physical and mental health. When you’re physically healthy, you’re more likely to feel mentally sharp, optimistic, and resilient.

Money is important but it is not wise to accumulate it at the expense of your own health. Financial security can provide peace of mind and access to quality healthcare. However, the saying emphasizes that good health is the ultimate wealth, as it allows you to fully experience and participate in life.

Nine Primary Causes of Diseases (according to TCM)

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Since Ancient times, people were known to explore ways and means to achieve good health and longevity in life. Many had died trying out their own concoctions of the elixir of life (Medieval Latin: elixir vitae), also known as elixir of immortality, like a potion that supposedly grants the drinker eternal life.

Along the way, human beings built a vast domain of expert knowledge on the working of the human mind and body.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners have identified nine body constitutions, each with its unique characteristics and tendencies towards certain imbalances.

Potential TCM questions to determine one’s body constitution type

The 9 body constitution types are

  1. Neutral (Well-Balanced): Represents a harmonious state where all elements are in equilibrium.
  2. Qi Deficient: Characterized by insufficient vital energy (Qi).
  3. Yang Deficient: Implies a lack of Yang energy, which is warm and active.
  4. Yin Deficient: Indicates insufficient Yin energy, associated with coolness and nourishment.
  5. Damp Phlegm: Refers to an accumulation of dampness and phlegm in the body.
  6. Damp Heat: Involves excess heat combined with dampness.
  7. Blood Stagnation: Describes poor circulation and stagnation of blood flow.
  8. Qi Stagnation: Occurs when Qi doesn’t flow smoothly.
  9. Special Constitution: Unique individual variations that don’t fit neatly into the other categories.

Knowing one’s body constitution can be a useful tool for maintaining good health and addressing sub-health issues that one could have:

  • Prevention: By understanding your body’s strengths and weaknesses, you can take proactive steps to prevent imbalances from developing into full-blown health problems. For example, someone with a Yang Deficient constitution who tends to feel cold easily might prioritize warm clothes and a warming diet.

  • Personalized Diet and Lifestyle: TCM suggests dietary and lifestyle adjustments specific to each body constitution. Someone with Phlegm & Dampness might benefit from a more invigorating exercise routine and a diet that avoids greasy foods, while someone with Yin Deficiency might focus on cooling foods and activities.

  • Early Intervention: Sub-health is a TCM concept referring to a state of less-than-optimal health that can precede illness. Recognizing sub-health issues like fatigue or sluggish digestion related to your body constitution allows you to address them with minor adjustments before they become more serious.

Here’s an analogy: Imagine your body constitution is your car’s factory settings.

By understanding these settings, you can fine-tune your diet, exercise, and lifestyle to keep your “car” running smoothly and prevents your car breakdown/s (illnesses).

Remember that most people have a mix of these constitutions. It is, usually, one dominant constitution that prevails. Factors like age, gender, emotions, and living environment also play a part in influencing our body constitution.

Maintaining balance is essential for overall well-being.

It is important to note that TCM takes a holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment of a person with an ailment or disease. Physical, mental, spiritual and environment factors are also considered in the diagnosis.

Self-diagnosis can be tricky and treatment, usually tailored to the individual which is not easy to do in practice. Consulting a qualified TCM practitioner for a proper body constitution assessment is recommended. They can create a personalized plan that incorporates dietary adjustments, herbal remedies, and other TCM practices to address your specific needs.
